Six or eight of you in Mount Standfast: which villa

The Caribbean Sea seen from a hillside villa terrace in Mount Standfast, Saint James, Barbados, with a pool deck in the foreground

For a group of six, the short answer is Villa Calliaqua if you want to be fed and looked after, and 10 Westmoreland Hills if you'd rather cook, do your own laundry and keep the week simple. For eight or ten, the calculation changes entirely, and it changes in a way most people don't expect: on this stretch of coast, the five-bedroom houses are often the same houses as the eight-bedroom ones, with rooms locked off and a smaller rate attached. That quirk is the single most useful thing to understand before you start comparing listings.

Mount Standfast sits on the West Coast a little north of Holetown, and it's noticeably quieter than its neighbours. Mostly villas, some right on the sand, long stretches where nothing much happens after dark. That's the appeal and also the one thing to plan around: you'll want a car, or a driver you can call.

Three bedrooms, three very different weeks

All three of the three-bedroom villas here sleep six and all three sit inland or on the hill rather than on the beach. Beyond that they diverge sharply.

Villa Calliaqua comes with a cook, a housekeeper and security, working mornings and evenings, six days a week. It sits high on the Sugar Hill estate with an acre of garden, a lagoon-shaped pool with a waterfall, and a music system wired indoors and out. The terrace has a coral stone dining table under a chandelier, which sounds absurd until you're sitting at it at eight in the evening with the bougainvillaea lit up. The three-bedroom rate here is the lock-off arrangement: the house has five bedrooms, two are closed, the whole place is still yours. Babysitters can be arranged. During holiday weeks the house goes to a full-house rate only.

10 Westmoreland Hills is the newer, more contemporary proposition, in a gated community with round-the-clock security, a shared gym and a communal pool and pool bar alongside its own private pool and ocean view. Three air-conditioned bedrooms, the two guest rooms configurable as twins or kings, which matters if you're two couples plus two friends. It has a washer and dryer, free parking on site, and the listing notes it suits guests with slight mobility issues. Royal Westmoreland's golf course is a short drive. A stay here includes membership at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion Beach Club.

Sugar Hill - Frangipani is a townhouse rather than a standalone house, recently renovated under new owners, and it's the one I'd point a family at. Every bedroom is en suite, the two upstairs rooms each open onto their own balcony with a sea view, and there's a bunk-bed option for younger children. The terrace seats eight for dinner, with a gas barbecue and a swing chair. Sugar Hill's shared facilities are the real draw: four tennis courts, a gym, a club room, a restaurant and bar, and a very large infinity pool, with The Deck at Sugar Hill open to the public if you want somewhere to eat without leaving the estate. There's a padel court now, bookable by the hour at reception. Housekeeping and a 24-hour guard are included. Holetown's restaurants are a five-minute drive.

The five-bedroom trick worth knowing

If your group is eight or ten, look at the five-bedroom rates before you assume you need a big house. Footprints is an eight-bedroom beachfront property; the five-bedroom rate simply locks off three rooms and gives your group the run of the rest, privately. Every one of the five suites has a king bed and its own bathroom. The house sits on Alleynes Bay with an infinity-edge pool, a second wading pool by the beach, a roof deck tub, a gym, a cinema and a wet bar. Staff include a housekeeper, a butler and a chef. Two honest caveats, both from the house's own notes: the beach there fluctuates seasonally in how accessible it is, and construction work is affecting the property until further notice, so ask us where that stands before you commit. If you want the full footprint, Footprints and South Cottage adds the cottage a minute's walk back from the sand.

Bananaquit takes a different approach to the same group size. It sits at the end of Plantation Drive at Sugar Hill, three bedrooms in the main house and two more in a detached cottage off to the left of the entrance, which is the layout you want when the group splits into early risers and late nights. Sea views run the length of the first floor, the kitchen has been redone, and the basement holds a games room with a pool table and table tennis. Housekeeping six days a week. Court times at the clubhouse are bookable. There's a summer discount running from mid-April through October 2026 that's worth asking about, and the cancellation terms tighten considerably inside sixty days, with Christmas bookings non-refundable outright.

Hill or sand: the choice that shapes the week

This is the real decision in Mount Standfast, and it's not about money. The hillside houses at Sugar Hill and Westmoreland Hills give you garden, breeze, estate facilities and the kind of pool you'll actually spend the day beside. You drive to the beach, or you use a beach club: Calliaqua and 10 Westmoreland Hills both include membership at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion Beach Club, which gets you loungers, umbrellas, water sports and bar service on one of the better beaches on this coast, and Frangipani has complimentary beach membership at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion too, with a discount on food and drink.

Beachfront means Footprints: you walk out of the house onto Alleynes Bay. Ju Ju's Beach Bar is right there, behind the green house next door, and Lone Star is on the 1b highway with tables over the water. Nauti HQ & Grill does whatever the boats brought in that morning, grilled, from midday until eight, closed Tuesdays. Jumas is the other name locals give you for this stretch.

What the hill gives you back is quiet and air moving through the house at night. What the beach gives you is not having to think about a car at six in the evening. If you're a group of friends who want to be at a bar by sunset, go beachfront. If there are children, or three generations, or anyone who wants a gym and a tennis court, go up the hill.

Getting around, and why that matters more here

Mount Standfast has fewer places to eat within walking distance than Holetown or Speightstown, and a group staying here should plan for a car or a reliable driver. Holetown is a few minutes south by road, Speightstown a few minutes further north, and both have a proper run of restaurants. Folkestone Marine Park sits just above Holetown on the way to Speightstown; the wreck of the Stavronikita went down off that coast and grew into a reef, and the glass-bottom boat and snorkelling trips from the visitor centre are genuinely good with children. You can reach it on the coast road bus for a couple of Barbados dollars if you'd rather not drive. Sandy Lane beach is a few minutes south. St James Parish Church is a short drive from most of these houses.

If you want someone else to work out the week

The villa is the easy part. What takes the time is everything stacked around it: who's cooking on which nights, whether the chef at Footprints covers all three meals, what transfers from the airport run to, whether a boat day for eight is worth booking in advance, how much the groceries come to when you're provisioning for a week rather than a weekend.

We cost the whole thing before you commit: villa, taxes and fees, staff, food, cars, transfers, activities, gratuities. One advisor prices it, books it and stays with the trip, with an overnight number if something goes sideways at eleven at night. Chefs, provisioning, restaurant reservations and boat charters all go through the same person. There's no booking fee to you.

Every one of these houses needs availability confirmed before a booking goes through, which is less bureaucratic than it sounds: message us with your dates and group and we'll come back with what's genuinely open, what it costs in full, and which of these five is the right house for the week you're describing.
